“Funny, engrossing, and one-of-a-kind. If You’re Out There completely swept me away.” —Becky Albertalli, New York Times bestselling author of Leah on the Offbeat

Part whip-smart suspense tale, part touching story of friendship, this is an extraordinary debut about a determined teen trying to solve a mystery no one else believes in.

After Zan’s best friend moves to California, she is baffled and crushed when Priya suddenly ghosts. Worse, Priya’s social media has turned into a stream of ungrammatical posts chronicling a sunny, vapid new life that doesn’t sound like her at all.

Everyone tells Zan not to be an idiot Let Priya do her reinvention thing and move on. But until Zan hears Priya say it, she won’t be able to admit that their friendship is finished.

It’s only when she meets Logan, the compelling new guy in Spanish class, that Zan begins to open up about her sadness, her insecurity, her sense of total betrayal. And he’s just as willing as she is to throw himself into the investigation when everyone else thinks her suspicions are crazy.

Then a clue hidden in Priya’s latest selfie introduces a new, deeply disturbing possibility

Maybe Priya isn’t just not answering Zan’s emails.

Maybe she can’t.

Ebook If You're Out There Katy Loutzenhiser Books

"After Zan’s best friend Priya moves away, she stops responding to Zan’s messages. Convinced all is not well, Zan begins trying to solve the mystery, one everyone is convinced doesn’t exist. Zan ignores her friends and family and with the help of new classmate Logan, they investigate.

I wasn’t certain where IF YOU’RE OUT THERE was headed until near the end of the book. Zan was either a stalker or a friend who knew her friend was not okay.

Zan was such a great narrator, sarcastic, sometimes mean, always devoted to Priya. She could be both thoughtless and thoughtful, but was mostly centered on talking to Priya to the detriment of all other relationships.

Katy Loutzenhisen is a terrific writer. She created a diverse cast of characters, never for the sake of diversity, only as part of the layers of the characters. I will definitely look for her other books."

  • After Zan’s best friend Priya moves away, she stops responding to Zan’s messages. Convinced all is not well, Zan begins trying to solve the mystery, one everyone is convinced doesn’t exist. Zan ignores her friends and family and with the help of new classmate Logan, they investigate.

  • As I’ve known Katy since she was a young girl, hanging out with my daughter, Abby I saw a spark of determination in her eyes and knew she would accomplish great things. Well she has. “ If you’re out there” is a fantastic, well thought out novel. It brings strong emotionally bonded characters, described so well that you know them through and through. The mystery is very well played out and in the end, they live happily ever after... but wait, do they? So very proud of Katy’s achievement and can’t wait for the next one.
  • Wonderful story, loveable and engaging characters, complex themes beautifully written. Honest, funny, heartwarming. This book is delightful to read! The characters feel so real.
  • Just the perfect mix of mystery and girl meets boy. Going to read the author’s other book- wish there was more than be more to read.
  • I really hope that my best friends are like Zan and never give up on me.

Zan and Priya were best friends. Their moms were friends until Priya’s mom died. They did everything together. Zan had other people she would talk to, but not a real friend like Priya. So it was killing her that not only did Priya move to California, but she also stopped talking to her. Priya left with her step-dad, Ben. Zan stayed behind in Chicago, living with her mom, her mom’s girlfriend, and her little brother. She worked a lot all summer, but now school has started and she can’t stop thinking about Priya.

Logan is the new kid at school. He lives with his aunt and younger sister. There are a lot of rumors that Logan was a criminal and was trying to start over in Chicago. He starts talking to Priya and for some reason, she tells him the story of Priya. How her intagram stories don’t sound like her. How she would never stop talking to Zan. How her photos don’t show her. She also starts replying back to people in a strange way.

Logan and Zan start looking into every clue they can find. They visit Priya’s boyfriend at college. Zan talks to Priya’s dad. They go to her house. All they find are more questions. During this time, we see Zan suffering a lot with her loss. She goes back and forth between sadness and anger. It starts to affect her family and school. Logan is dealing with his own issues from his past in Indiana. But they grow closer as they spend more and more time together.

This was a great mystery, but it was also a wonderful story of true friendship. How you know your best friend so well and you would have to know when something isn’t right. Zan never gives up, even when everyone tells her to just let it go.

I gave this book 4 stars. Thank you to the publisher and Edelweiss for my copy for review.

Warnings for addiction, family issues, and grief. There is more I should warn about, but I don’t want to ruin the story. Just know that this is a mystery, so everything isn’t sweet.
  • I’m a sucker for a book with a good friendship aspect. I under the draw of writing the frienemy, but I love a good female friendship that has its ups and downs but still can withstand the test of time. And I love a story that deals with the possibility of losing that friendship and how that affects one or both parties. If You’re Out There is a book that explores but with a twist and it was done remarkably well.

In If You’re Out There Zan is starting the year off without her best friend, Priya, who just moved to California. As if that isn’t bad enough Priya appears to have ghosted her, only showing up on social media to post pictures of how wonderful her new life is. While trying to figure out how to navigate her Priya-less world, Zan meets the new guy at school, Logan. He isn’t anything Zan is looking for, but he is there for her when she needs him, especially after she starts to notice something strange in Priya’s photos that makes her think…maybe she wasn’t ghosted after all. Maybe Priya is actually in trouble.

What I loved most about If You’re Out There was the focus on how friendships are hard and tricky. Like all relationships they take work and when one person isn’t there the work feel harder and not worth it. It showed how easy it is to let go of a friendship if you don’t fight for it when there is something to fight for. Zan refused to believe that her friend would just ghost her. She knew her better than anyone else and she fought for that feeling, even when she seemed crazy to everyone around her and felt crazy to herself. She fought and fought for her friendship because she believed her friend would fight for it too if she could. To me that showed what true friendship is about and why I loved the book.

I also really loved the mystery aspect of the story. Was Priya really ghosting Zan or was she in trouble? I was never really certain to be honest. I never knew which way the story was going to go because both options seemed plausible. I also liked that Logan was there to listen to Zan when no one else would. That was another huge highlight. Also helped that he was adorable.

All in all I highly recommend this debut by Katy Loutzenhiser. It hits all the right notes and will keep you reading until the end. Definitely a need to read book to add to your TBR.

How the blinding of Sergeant Isaac Woodard changed the course of America’s civil rights history

On February 12, 1946, Sergeant Isaac Woodard, a returning, decorated African American veteran, was removed from a Greyhound bus in Batesburg, South Carolina, after he challenged the bus driver’s disrespectful treatment of him. Woodard, in uniform, was arrested by the local police chief, Lynwood Shull, and beaten and blinded while in custody.

President Harry Truman was outraged by the incident. He established the first presidential commission on civil rights and his Justice Department filed criminal charges against Shull. In July 1948, following his commission’s recommendation, Truman ordered an end to segregation in the U.S. armed forces. An all-white South Carolina jury acquitted Shull, but the presiding judge, J. Waties Waring, was conscience-stricken by the failure of the court system to do justice by the soldier. Waring described the trial as his “baptism of fire,” and began issuing major civil rights decisions from his Charleston courtroom, including his 1951 dissent in Briggs v. Elliott declaring public school segregation per se unconstitutional. Three years later, the Supreme Court adopted Waring’s language and reasoning in Brown v. Board of Education. Richard Gergel’s Unexampled Courage details the impact of the blinding of Sergeant Woodard on the racial awakening of President Truman and Judge Waring, and traces their influential roles in changing the course of America’s civil rights history.

"‘Unexampled Courage” is the phrase Waties Waring used to describe the plaintiffs in the landmark case Briggs v Elliott. They risked their lives. By the end of this book, the reader understands why this phrase is fully justified in describing Waring himself. I grew up on Tradd Street, where the Warings lived. I heard my parents disparage him. To paraphrase Clifford Durr, they were good and decent people but for one idea. From my childhood experiences and knowledge of Charleston in those days, I can attest that Gergel has this part of the story exactly right. Gergel writes with a wonderful legal clarity. And his dispassionate style renders the passions in the story — violence, anger, prejudice — all the more real. A wonderful book on critical, but perhaps under appreciated, events in the civil rights movement."

Unexampled Courage The Blinding of Sgt Isaac Woodard and the Awakening of President Harry S Truman and Judge J Waties Waring Richard Gergel 9780374107895 Books Reviews

  • ‘Unexampled Courage” is the phrase Waties Waring used to describe the plaintiffs in the landmark case Briggs v Elliott. They risked their lives. And his dispassionate style renders the passions in the story — violence, anger, prejudice — all the more real. A wonderful book on critical, but perhaps under appreciated, events in the civil rights movement.
  • This is a tremendous book. Judge Gergel has done a great job of bringing to light the courage of Isaac Woodard, a decorated African-American service member who fought in WWII only to be blinded by a racist police officer in South Carolina only hours after his discharge from the army. The other hero of the book is Judge Waties Waring, the 8th generation Charlestonian who was so moved by the Woodard case that he became a civil rights pioneer, at great cost to himself. Familiar figures like Thurgood Marshall and Harry S. Truman round out this well-written and gripping story. A fabulous read for anyone interested in the history of the civil rights movement.
  • A magnificent book. Brilliantly written on a true landmark case that reads like a novel. This a riveting portrait of one of the century’s great heroic figures, a judge who braved a bigoted community. Gergel's account was extremely moving for me and a real eye-opener.. This should be required reading. Philip Prioleau
  • The experiences of Jackie Robinson and Emmett Till are often cited as the beginning of the Civil Rights period but the 1946 experience of an often forgotten individual named Sgt. Isaac Woodard certainly deserves to be resurrected and given its rightful place in American history. Sgt. Isaac Woodard had been only hours before been released from his position in the United States army when he had the audacity to demand respect from a haughty police chief named Lynwood Shull in Batesburg, South Carolina who used his blackjack to beat Sgt. Woodard which resulted in blinding the returning soldier from World War II for life.

The resulting trial of the police chief resulted in his acquittal which was no surprise considering the segregationist beliefs in the deep south. Heroes by the name of President Harry S. Truman and Judge J. Waties Waring rose themselves above public opinion demonstrating "unexampled courage" by putting their reputation and their lives on the line by dedicating themselves to advancing the cause of civil rights in America. This was by no means an easy task due to the 1896 Supreme Court decision involving Plessy vs. Ferguson which stated that segregation was acceptable as long as the facilities were equal. Of course, in reality, they were not.

Author Richard Gergel spends time on various court cases involving civil rights and the courage involved by those who were willing to stand up to the inequality of rights that should be shared by all American citizens. Judge Waring and his wife, for example found themselves having to find themselves a new set of friends.

The book contains sixteen photographs with a conclusion as to what happened to many of the individuals in the remainder of their lives. We owe our thanks to author Richard Gergel for bringing to light this often forgotten episode in America's history which our citizens need to be aware of especially in these present challenging times when bigotry is once again raising its ugly head, and sadly even encouraged. I'll let it go at that.
  • Judge Gergel's wonderful book describes the utter venality and cruelty of white supremacy and its tentacles extending into the highest levels of government. Two courageous men, one an accidental president and the other a dissident federal judge, blazed the long and difficult trail toward human dignity for all citizens of the United States.
  • I heard about this book by mere happenstance. On the death of a distant cousin, I talked to another cousin who recommended it. He had heard about it because we have family roots in Aiken, SC and Aiken was mistakenly sited at the place were the attack on Sgt. Woodward happened.

I think that if there were a subtitle to the book it should be "He lost his sight so that other could see" because that is really what happened. The terrible tragedy led to other people opening their eyes to the injustice that were going on in America toward African Americans.

For people with background in civil rights litigation it is a good review. For people with no back ground on the evolution of civil rights cases in the courts, it is an excellent starting point.

Judge Gergel has done an outstanding job of mixing facts about the case, American history and legal history to create and outstanding book that I am recommending to all of my friends. Should be a must read for everyone in America.
  • One of the best books I have read in a long time. Our nation needs more explications like this of our sad history of discrimination, disregard, and mistreatment of fellow human beings because of the color of their skin. Done without ranker or emotion, but with facts, legal reasoning and frankness, the author takes the reader on a journey where persons in positions of authority who can make difference act with courage and do, in fact, make a positive difference that lifts us to be our better selves. This kind of courage — doing the right thing when the circumstances require it — is what makes America great. I strongly recommend this terrific book.

Marvel Captain Marvel The Art of the Movie Eleni Roussos Books Reviews

  • I was not very familiar with Captain Marvel prior to the release of the recent film. This book is a production treasure for fans. Not only does it articulately describe the process through which the characters were visualized and created and re-created (which is a fascinating discussion in and of itself), but there are many fun historical tidbits relating to the characters, and how they tie in to the rest of the Marvel Universe. The book is gorgeous with full colored pictures and thorough explanatory text on the background and development/reasoning of this ground breaking character. It is a fun read whether you're a long time fan, new to the MCU or to this character. I didn't read any of the Marvel comics but have seen most of the MCU movies. The book is well written and a great value for the info it contains. If you love strong, complex female characters, or you're a comic fan this will be a great addition to your collection.
  • Amazing beautiful book awesome just like all the other art of the movie books great detail and information
  • A little bit expensive but the quality of the art and the overall feel of the book make it worth it! If you're somewhat torn just go ahead and get it! You won't regret it!
  • Perfect for fans of the movie who want more details into the world building process as well as excellent character studies like how the iconic mohawk came to be and the look of young Fury.
  • Another great marvel book. Very inspirational.
  • Fascinating look at the design of this great film. Doesn't give away important plot points.
  • An amazing book for an amazing movie! I love these types of books and getting to see the concept art that goes into making a movie. This one did not disappoint.
  • Love the content and the box cover’s artwork. This is a great MCU artbook to add to the collection

Supermarket eBook Bobby Hall Reviews

  • Don’t know why people are putting one star because the book came damaged. These reviews are supposed to be about the book itself and let me tell you it is a masterpiece! I have fully delved into logic’s mind and I’m only halfway through. He is such a talented artist. Highly recommend this book to anyone! Fair warning, there is cussing if any children want to read it.
  • Wow. This book is BAD.
It might be one of the worst novels I’ve ever read.

I was browsing through the bookstore looking to pick up a few new reads and grabbed this one. Sounded interesting. I have no clue who Logic is so I picked this one based solely on the synopsis written on the back of the book.

I read the whole book pretty quickly, so it is an “easy read” and the issue isn’t necessarily with the basic idea behind the book, the issue is that the writing is HORRIBLE. It reads as though a 6th grader wrote it. I was cringing at almost every line throughout the entire book. I’d love to leave some examples but I’d have to just copy and paste the entire book here. Just trust me- it’s bad to the point of being embarrassing. I’m no literary snob either, I’ve read a LOT of books in my life and can appreciate a book that is easy to read (I prefer them!) but this is just ridiculous.

The characters have no depth. You don’t care about or relate to any of them because all you know about them is they are “hot” or “sweet” or a “kind of dumb-looking like a bimbo who gets by on her looks- but she was intelligent. Just naive-seeming”. Yes, that’s an actual description from this book.

And can someone who’s finished this please explain to me if we are supposed to have the “twist” to this train wreck figured out immediately?! Because this was all very predictable and it was almost laughable reading the author attempting to “hint” the twist.

When I finished this and checked and see hundreds and hundreds of 5 star reviews the only thing I can assume is they are fans of his? I mean, I know everyone can have an opinion of a story but this book is just so terribly written that it doesn’t matter what the hell the story is. The writing is bad, and I don’t think that’s an opinion, it’s a fact!

At least when you get to the acknowledgements it all does make a little more sense. The author basically says he never read a novel in his life, then “binge-read novels for a week” in his 20s and decided “I’m gonna write a book!”.
Thank god for him he’s famous enough now for people to pacify whatever he randomly decides to do because that’s the only way this garbage would be published.

P.s. I’ve ready hundreds of books and never in my life written a review of one.
    This was that bad.
  • A few chapters in and it's amazing. I love Logic, but typically when artists start branching out the quality drops too so I wasn't expecting too much. With Supermarket I was really blown away with how well written it is and how drawn in I am. 5/5 MUST BUY
  • Absolulty love it! I’m a die hard logic fan since close to day one, but I’ve been trying to read it without think about logic so I can have a real opinion, and I gotta say, I’m on chapter 9 and I love it. I hope Bobby keeps writing books, maybe a incredibly true story book!? 😂
  • Done with chapter 1 its a well written book i was hype all day i ran from my bus to my house as fast possible just to read it
  • wow. i’m actually mind blown by how good this novel actually is. of course i knew it was going to be good because bobby puts his everything in his work but this is just outstanding. ✌🏻❤️➕
  • Ordered the audio book on release day. Was blown away and finished it within 2 days. Those reviews of damaged books , I bet you this was not Bobby’s (Logic’s) intention. I guarantee you it, he has no control over that it probably wasn’t shipped properly or without bubble wrap, I’m not sure since I got the Audiobook, I just think he deserves a break these things Happen, He was signing books inside of book stores, and saying go grab them while they are there. That’s crazy. While I understand your frustration that your book came damaged, these things Happen with shipping from time to time. Supermarket is a great book and I enjoyed it, I recommend this product
  • One of the greatest to ever do it. The Rattpack loves and appreciates you, Bobby. 💯

Umbrella Academy Volume 1 Apocalypse Suite eBook Gerard Way Gabriel Ba Reviews :

Umbrella Academy Volume 1 Apocalypse Suite eBook Gerard Way Gabriel Ba Reviews

  • "The Umbrella Academy" graphic novel falls into the extremely rare category of books which aren't as good as the film/show made from them. This series is sort of juvenile and reads more like a storyboard than a complete story. The most interesting thing about it may be the fact that the author was the former front man for the band "My Chemical Romance".
The Netflix series was really good, but I feel like had I read this first it may have ruined the series (mainly by giving away the big mystery in the show).
If you're a big fanboy of the Netflix show or the authors band you may enjoy this. But for a general audience looking for something to read I'd say pass.
  • Sometimes you have to listen to your kids. I’d never heard of Dark Horse’s UMBRELLA ACADEMY until my daughter mentioned one day she’d like to read it. So I saw it at my local comic shop and picked it up for her. She still hasn’t read it yet, but I thought it looked interesting, so I gave it a go. And I’m glad I did.

Created and written by Gerard Way with art by Gabriel Ba, THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY is based on the idea that one day, thirty years ago, forty-three children were born at the same time, many of them to women who had no idea they were pregnant. All but seven of these mysterious children died. Those seven were adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves, “world-renowned scientist and wealthy entrepreneur.” When asked why he chose to adopt the children, he answered, “To save the world, of course.”

Hargreeves trained the children and raised them to be super heroes as each was endowed with a special power of their own--all but one, number 7, Vanya, who appeared to be completely ordinary in every way. The children made their debut ten years later when the Eiffel Tower, under the control of zombie-robot Gustave Eiffel, attacked. The children ended the reign of terror and their legend was born.

Flash forward twenty years and the children haven’t spoken to each other in a while, each going off to live their own variation on “a life.”

They only reconvene at their old home for Hargreeves’s funeral. And the old rivalries return. Unfortunately, they must set aside their differences because now, after so long, is the thing they’ve waited for so long. The world is about to end and the children of the Umbrella Academy must save it.

This first volume, “Apocalypse Suite”, collects the original six-issue run of the series in one book and it’s definitely worth picking up if you like comics, humor, science fiction, fantasy, absurdity … basically, if you like anything at all, THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY is going to make you smile.

Way’s writing is like the work of someone who’s been writing comics all his life. His pacing, his use of dialogue and flashbacks and captions and suspense, it’s all there. While the book focuses primarily on only a few of the members, everyone is developed enough that you get a feel for who and what they are in the grand scheme, and Way even manages to use what’s NOT said in helping to establish enough background detail that we can fill in the blanks and create an entire backstory for them.

I can only imagine how entertaining the script alone must have been for artist Gabriel Ba, who also shines here.

His sense of drama and tension and panel layout all coalesce into this perfect thing that grabs your attention and sweeps you along, and before you know it, you’re looking at the last page wondering how the hell did I read that so fast? And why does it have to be over?

I wasn’t expecting much going into this book, to be honest. I know she mentioned it, but didn’t really elaborate and I only got it because I spoil her, but I’m glad she did because I really feel my general well of knowledge is improved by having experienced THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY.

My only wish is that more people got it. I know this book’s got tons of great reviews, but I’ve read a few negative ones that make me wonder if they read the same book I did, because this made perfect sense to me, it made me laugh, it made me feel, and it shocked and surprised me many times. For me, THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY Apocalypse Suite is 100% recommended.
  • Loved the story line and the artwork! It came a little bent but, was easily fixed.
  • I love these books. It is the complete opposite of those stupid news puff pieces you read—this is everything ugly about family with enough grit and humour to make it worth reading. I love these characters and how they’re all messed up, together. There is some basic draw between them, not quite enmity, but not quite love, either. Something sinister, in theory, if only they were all actually nasty enough to indulge it. But, they aren’t and so they don’t. How many of you have that one or two in your families? Yep, then you’ll enjoy these, too.
  • I first saw the Umbrella Academy in the Netflix show and decided to pick up the comic. Honestly I liked the show better.

The comic, with its infinite special effects budget, it a lot stranger with more supervillains, adventures and madness. Check out Luther flying with a jet pack to punch out the Eiffel Tower. But Gabriel Bá's art is very stylized and not suited to nuance, so the characters never come alive for me. The story as a whole moves so fast none of the characters really develop, while the show has excellent development.

What was impressive was how Gerard Way built a world and made it feel like you were picking up the latest issue of some long-running series like Doom Patrol or X-Men (two comics about weirdos going to a crazy millionaire's super hero school). But in the end it felt like a gimmick rather than something I wanted to stick with.

So if you liked the show this might be interesting, but I'm not sure it's good.
  • After reading Killjoys and Sp//dr by Gerard Way, I was anxious to dive into his main and largest work The Umbrella Academy. Gerard writes amazing, colorful, and insightful lyrics for MCR so I wanted to see what his writing skills were. Umbrella academy is a crazy ride into a world where Planet of the Apes meets X Men (in a way). Gerard does a great job telling the story and giving each character a heart, personality, and reason for being. I'm reading Dallas now, and can't wait to see what he does in Umbrella Academy 2.
  • I don’t know which log I slept under for this long because ONE OF THE BEST COMICS OUT THERE PEOPLE. I’m so glad that i actually got into reading this because mindblown. Super excited for the series. Hope they won’t muck it up, honestly
  • My daughter is a big fan of Gerald (sp) and as he has branched out to do graphic novels, a passion of his--fans are enjoying his work. They still love his music, of course...but he really is GOOD when it comes to his other works. THIS included!

  • I’m a real Shaun the Sheep fan, having no idea what Aardman was or did. I bought the book mostly out of curiosity; once I got started, I couldn’t put it down.
This is the story about 2 geeky guys in England, meeting by chance , developing a deep camaraderie of cartooning and creativity , never thinking about where their lives and careers would end up.
This story is what everyone wants a success story to be people with talent, drive, ability who roll with the bad times but continue to act as they believe despite Hollywood and the lure of big bucks forever, they acted together with their growing staff and decided to do things “ their way” To say they lived happily ever after is pretty close to the truth. What a breath of fresh air in the tawdry entertainment world! Hooray for the good guys who did the difficult but right thing. And I still love Shaun the Sheep.
  • The story of Aardman is such a compelling one. It’s not just the story of unforgettable characters - it’s the tale of the remarkably talented people who brought them to life. Thank goodness Lord and Sproxton forged their childhood friendship and embarked on the animation journey together. The world is a better place because of their company’s strong storytelling.
  • An excellent peek at creative genius at work.
