- Hypocritical - Special Ed Book and accessible features are disabled from the publisher?! I use for as many text and books as possible. I need to use the text-to-speech feature to learn and study best. It is not activated for this book, nor is Xray. The material is quality and up to date, but the loose leaf format is annoying in the digital version. Additionally, not having active links for the supplemental activities is misleading. For the price, this should be an example of accommodated/ Universal Design options for reading a studying with all of the appropriate exercises included for a variety of learning/studying styles. This is a poor demonstration of how to accommodate student.
- Where to start... A bound version wasn't available, and since it was a required text I had no choice but to get the loose-leaf version. Is this why it doesn't seem to have had a full, professional review? Compared to almost all the other, often uneven, texts I have had to wade through in years of graduate study, the writing and editing often seems deadening/condescending. Perhaps it's intended for a low-level undergrad audience; for a professional master's degree it feels insultingly didactic. I already own a graduate degree from an ivy league university, so perhaps I'm expecting too much. Still, a little bit of outsider input would probably have helped this effort--all four authors are from the same department at the same college. To make matters worse, the font size is grayscale (some of the headings are almost whitescale) and vanishingly small. For a text about special education, which includes teaching the visually impaired, this feels almost like a cruel joke. On the other hand, equipped with my strongest pair of readers and good reading light, I was able to make out the larger main body text, and it appears that some of the case studies are really quite engaging and valuable. Consequently I didn't give this one star--but I had to think about it.
- I don't normally give reviews however, after buying the book for such a high price I feel that I need to share. I spent about $102. For the book only for it to be a loose leaf print. Sender could of thrown in a binder for the price. I needed the book for class and it arrived late. Had to play catch up on the reading before posting. To top it off the print is in grey. I already wear glasses so grey made it even harder for me to see and read. Had to purchase the kindle verse. Not very wise giving the book is about exceptional lives.
- Although this book does provide much helpful information, I was particularly struck by the inadequacy of the gifted student chapter. It perpetuates the misunderstanding that gifted students' exceptional needs lie primarily within the scope of academic issues. Most educators and administrators do not understand the social and emotional needs of gifted students. To better serve gifted students teachers and administrators should be familiar with theories such as Dabrowski's Theory of Positive Disintegration, as it is applied to the study of gifted students. The concept of "overexcitabilities" is relevant and constructive, and when educators are ignorant of how giftedness may manifest itself in students, behaviorally, emotionally, and socially, they may actually cause harm to such children.
- I'm a professor & I reviewed several Intro. Special Education books. This one seems to be the most thorough. It goes into the laws and IEPs in more depth than other books. It covers all the special education categories in depth. You can also download PowerPoints & other instructor resources. Will be assigning this for my class.
- The content is good. The quality of the book is garbage. I paid so much money for this book and it is flimsy. The paper is so thin that when I highlight anything, I can see it on the other page. If I have any remnants of lotion or regular skin oils on my hand, it smears the ink. Seriously. It is what makes me most angry about most of the textbooks I've received that are published by Pearson.
- I am reading this book as part of a course at ASU titled Educating the Exceptional Child. I can honestly say that this is one of the most informative texts that I've read during my time attending ASU. It not only exposes current methodology but challenges the status quo by letting the reader know about possible areas of opportunity in the field, such as, improvements to the identification, response, and implementation of special educational needs and educational strategies. A must read for anyone going into the education or teaching field.
- It is a good overall special education textbook.
It doesnt really have a whole lot of strategies, which is what I was looking for.
The e-textbook has lots of links to vidoe clips but they are all youtube clips so you can access the without the e-textbook.. The one thing I did like was the quizzes after each chapter (only accessed by e-text).
